Scholarships Application Information

Xi Psi Omega Scholarship

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded at Howard University in Washington, DC. Its purpose is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic achievement, exemplary character, and promote community service. Xi Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Anchorage on October 21, 1983. For over twenty years the chapter has implemented and participated in local community service programs, including providing scholarships to local high school students. 

Availability

One-time scholarships will be awarded. The number and the amount of the awards may vary each year. All scholarships awarded are for use in the following academic school year. The deadline for requesting distribution of awarded scholarship funds is December 31st of the award year. Applicants not attending school the first semester after high school graduation must submit a letter to XPO requesting a delay of funds. Funds not requested by December 31st of the award year will not be awarded.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a 2.5 or higher GPA, attend an Alaska senior high school; and actively participate in school and community activities. To qualify for an XPO scholarship, applicants must provide evidence that they have been accepted into an accredited two or four-year College or University. Recipients are not eligible to receive an XPO scholarship if they accept a full tuition, room and board scholarship, a two, three or four-year ROTC scholarship, or a military academy appointment.

Application Process

The application process is now fully online. Applicants for the XPO scholarship must complete the online form and upload the following documents:

Headshot photo of the student

Current transcript which reflects GPA and Class Rank

Two (2) letters of recommendation from teachers, employers, or community members (no relatives)

Verification documentation (Examples: copies of certificates, programs, newspaper articles, verification of employment, congratulatory/thank you letters, pictures of trophies/ribbons, community service timesheets, etc.)

Selection Process

Incomplete applications will not be considered. The Selection Committee will be comprised of members of Xi Psi Omega’s Scholarship Committee. Scholarship awards will be made without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, or disability. Selection will be based on the “whole person” concept and include considerations for both academic merit and financial need. Individual accomplishments and community service will also be considered. All decisions by the scholarship committee are final.

All applications including supplemental documents must be submitted by April 30th.
